La selección de Bélgica es una de las más prometedoras en la actualidad ya que tiene un equipo muy joven y lleno de talento, Martinez se encontraba sin equipo tras haber abandonado el Everton al finalizar la temporada pasada. La federación belga tenía una lista con 40 nombres en la que habían otros entrenadores de talla mundial pero finalmente se decidieron por el español.

Bélgica destituyó a su anterior entrenador, Marc Wilmots, debido a la eliminación en cuartos de final de la pasada Eurocopa frente a Gales. «Bob» Martinez habló en su presentación y dijo:

“Me siento orgulloso y honrado de ser el seleccionador belga”.

Por último, el español admitió que lleva siguiendo desde hace mucho tiempo a la selección belga ya que tiene mucho potencial a futuro y los amantes del fútbol ven a esta generación como una posible ganadora de un Mundial o una Eucocopa. Su debut con Bélgica será el próximo 1 de septiembre frente a España, donde Julen Lopetegui también hará su debut.
