Portugal empezó perdiendo el partido tras un gol al minuto 3 del delantero polaco Robert Lewandowski por la vía del penal lo cual complicó todo lo planteado por los portugueses. El empate llegó al minuto 33 en los pies de Renato Sanches tras un espectacular pase de taco de su compatriota Luis Nani. La esperanza de Portugal era Cristiano Ronaldo ya que es su máximo referente, pero el jugador del Real Madrid tuvo tres acciones muy claras las cuales no concretó.

Ninguno de los dos equipo se pudo hacer más daño durante los 120 minutos y la clasificación se la tenían que disputar desde «la lotería» de los penaltis. El último penal iba a ser pateado por el jugador Ricardo Quaresma quien no defraudó y anotó el gol que puso a celebrar a todo su país. Ahora Portugal debe esperar su próximo rival que se definirá mañana entre Gales y Bélgica para disputar la semifinal el próximo 6 de julio en Lyon.
