La última vez que el conjunto ‘asegurador’ se encontró en la primera posición de la Liga fue en el Apertura de la Copa Mustang 2009, de la mano de Alexis García.

Luego de vencer a Junior por la mínima en la primera fecha de la Liga Águila, de igualar en condición de visitante frente a Pasto por la segunda fecha y de la reciente victoria por 2 a 0 en Montería frente a Jaguares de Córdoba; La Equidad se ubica en la primera posición de la  Liga Águila 2017-I, 8 años después de su última aparición en este lugar de la tabla cuando jugada la fecha 15 obtuvo el liderato de la Copa Mustang 2009 luego de vencer en condición de local a Quindío por 2 a 1, con anotaciones de Wilson «El Pájaro» Carpintero (49′) y Stalin Motta (89′). Ese año el conjunto asegurador finalizó en la sexta posición del todos contra todos con 29 puntos (8V-5D-5E) y en la fase eliminatoria terminó segundo con 9 puntos, 1 punto menos que Once Caldas, quien clasificó a la final y venció a Junior por 5 a 2 en el resultado global, logrando así su tercer campeonato en la historia del fútbol profesional colombiano.

El plantel que logró el liderato en el 2009 era dirigido por Alexis García y conformado por:

De la mano del director técnico Arturo Boyacá, el conjunto bogotano se encuentra líder en solitari0 con 7 puntos, por encima de Deportivo Cali, Independiente Medellín y Atlético Nacional, todos con 6 unidades. Del conjunto bogotano, destaca el buen nivel del portero Diego Novoa que solo ha recibido un tanto en el torneo y su capitán Stalin Motta, quienes hacían parte del plantel que consiguió el último liderato en la liga hace 8 años; sumado a la compañía y experiencia que brindan jugadores como Fabian Vargas, Diego Valoyes  o Diego Álvarez que acumula dos tantos en lo que va del torneo. Juego Colectivo y de mucha energía y compromiso, son los aspectos que resaltan en el juego del equipo dirigido por Boyacá y que lo posicionan temporalmente en la cima de la tabla de la Liga Águila.

Se espera que este invicto lo continúe ratificando el conjunto capitalino este domingo 19 de febrero, cuando reciba en el Nemesio Camacho el Campín a las 3:15 pm a América de Cali que viene de derrotar a Junior en el Pascual Guerrero por 3 a 1 en la celebración de sus 90 años como club.
