Fase de Grupos:

El camino de Atl. Nacional para llegar a esta final de Copa Libertadores no fue fácil, visitó muchas canchas a través del continente, recibió a otros tantos equipos que también buscaban el mismo sueño, se enfrentó a equipos de jerarquía y a otros que de entrada sorprendieron. En la primera fase debió enfrentar a Huracán (Arg), Sporting Cristal (Per) y Peñarol (Uru), el sueño comenzó el 23 de Febrero cuando venció 2×0 a Huracán con goles de Marlos Moreno y Orlando Berrio, Luego recibió en casa a Sporting Cristal y le ganó 3-0, hizo lo propio con Peñarol pero esta vez fueron 4 los goles anotados por el verde paisa. Terminaría la fase de grupos ganando por la mínima diferencia en Perú y empatando a cero ante el globo en el Atanasio, primera ronda de ensueño de 6 partidos jugados ganó 5 partidos y empato el otro,  convirtió 12 goles a favor y no recibió ninguno.

Series «Mata – Mata»:

El 3 de mayo iniciaría la fase “mata-mata”, llaves de ida y vuelta para definir clasificados. En 8vos de final Nacional repitió rival, Huracán volvería a ser su víctima, pues tras un empate a 0-0 en Argentina, el equipo paisa con un contundente 4-2 en Medellín aseguró el tiquete a 4tos donde lo esperaba Rosario Central, otro equipo argentino. La ida en Gigante de Arroyito fue para los gauchos, pero la vuelta seria a otro precio. Macnelly a los 45’, Guerra a los 50’ y Berrio a los 90’ minutos le daría la victoria a Nacional quien se hacía más fuerte que nunca, fuerte para recibir a su rival en la semifinal, Sao Pablo de Brasil también se uniría a los equipos que Nacional enfrentó y derrotó. Con un Borja On Fire recién llegado de Cortuluá y en su debut, facturo pro duplicado en el mismísimo Morumbí. La vuelta iba a estar empañada de un gol tempranero de Calleri quien ponía en aprietos a los dirigidos por Rueda, pero otro doblete de Borja le daría, después de 23 años otra final de Copa Libertadores al verdolaga. En la final su rival fue sorpresa y equipo revelación, Independiente Del Valle pasó de ser equipo novato en el continental a ser finalista eliminando a equipos como Pumas de México, Atletico Mineiro de Brasil y River Plate y Boca Juniors de Argentina, ya empataron a 1 en Quito, por el local marcó el zaguero Mina, por el visitante O. Berrio.

Aunque el rendimiento superlativo de Atl. Nacional no lo discute nadie, el arbitraje en los partidos de “mata-mata” estuvieron cargados de polémica, Huracán terminó con 1 expulsado (Mancinelli), Rosario Central con 3 jugadores fuera del campo (Burgos, Musto y Lo Selso) y Sao Pablo con 3 (Maicon en la ida y 2 más en la vuelta, Lugano y Wesley). Números históricos y records que rompió este Atlético Nacional que quiere repetir la hazaña histórica de 1989 cuando de la mano de Maturana, García, Escobar, Álvarez y compañía se coronaron campeones de la COPA LIBERTADORES DE AMÉRICA. Para eso debe vencer a Independiente Del Valle en su cancha, ante su gente y sobre todo, revalidar que es el mejor equipo de la copa.

Repasemos la última victoria del verde paisa en condición de local ante Sao Pablo, Miguel Ángel Borja el protagonista de la serie.
