En un imponente marco en el Estadio Defensores del Chaco, Cerro Porteño logró lo que parecía muy difícil, remontar la ventaja que sacó Santa Fe de dos goles en Bogotá. El equipo «Cardenal» se vio lejos de ese nivel defensivo que había mostrado en los últimos partidos, pues al finalizar la primera mitad caía por tres goles de diferencia. Las anotaciones en la primera mitad para los paraguayos fueron de Cecilio Rodríguez, que fue la figura del encuentro, el cual marcó a los 5, 10 y 89 minutos firmando un triplete , Silvio Torales macaría en el minuto  44. 

En la segunda mitad se vio a un Santa Fe más seguro en defensa, pero con tres goles de desventaja el para el «León» el panorama estaba muy complicado. Costas sacó a Gordillo y Omar Pérez para darle ingreso a Anderson Plata, que sorprendió iniciando en el banco de suplentes y a Baldomero Perlaza, lo cual traería un efecto inmediato ya que al minuto 78 un remate del jugador Plata pegaría en la mano de un jugador del equipo paraguayo, por lo que se sancionaría penal para Santa Fe que ejecutó con claridad Jonathan Gómez al minuto 79. Con este resultado (3-1), Santa Fe estaba adentro de los cuartos de final del certamen, pero, con lo que no contaría es que al minuto 89 una llegada de Cerro terminaría en el cuarto gol para los paraguayos y también con la ilusión de Santa Fe por seguir en la copa.

Al final fue 4-3 en el global a favor de los paraguayos, quienes supieron hacer de la localía una fortaleza, en la cual la mayoría del partido tuvieron el control de este. Cerro se medirá ante el DIM en los cuartos de final, mientras que Santa Fe tendrá que enfocarse en la Copa Colombia en la que está en la semifinal y en la liga Águila en la que marcha octavo, con todas las chances para clasificar a la fase final.  El ítem a mejorar para el equipo de Costas es la defensa, ya que tanto como los volantes de marca y los centrales no tuvieron un buen partido, también deja inquietudes Robinson Zapata, el cual deja la sensación de que pudo haber respondido mejor en varias acciones del partido.
