Tras haber perdido la final de la Copa América Centenario, el jugador argentino se encuentra en Guatemala promocionando el fútbol tenis y ofreciendo charlas de liderazgo. Desde ese país «Masche» habló con la prensa sobre su futuro y aseguró que espera estar «muchos años más» en el equipo catalán. Habían muchos rumores sobre su salida del Barcelona pero con sus declaraciones les puso fin: “Espero que sea una gran temporada. Siempre inicia uno la temporada con mucha ilusión. Ojalá que sea lo mejor”.

En el tema de su selección no quiso hablar mucho pues haber perdido la final fue muy doloroso para Mascherano: “Hace muy poco tiempo que ha terminado una Copa América para nosotros dolorosa. No es momento de decir nada. Me lo guardo para mí”.
